Wise Up to Winter: Scarves, Snoods and Silver Jewellery

Thursday, 14 January 2016  |  prettycool

When the first snow hits, we all have two choices. Either we hide indoors and hibernate, or we head out and embrace the cold weather. Being properly kitted out is the best way to ensure you don’t succumb to the winter chill, and accessories play a key role in keeping you warm.

At PrettyCool, we’re big believers in the right accessories for the occasion, and your winter wardrobe is important to keep you warm and stylish on cold nights. Whether you like to make a bold statement, or you prefer to downplay your accessories, we have a few ideas that will revitalise a tired wardrobe.

Complete your look with a scarf

Winter coats tend to be fashioned from dark, weighty fabrics, and some can look a little overpowering on smaller frames. The right scarf can break up the monotony, as well as providing a valuable extra layer that will trap your body heat.

During the winter months, there’s no need to stick with black and navy colourways. Scarves tend to hide your jewellery, so try to think of your scarf as an added accessory rather than simply a functional item, and choose a scarf that complements and contrasts with your outer garments, rather than blending in. Tartan scarves are sturdy, traditional and fantastically warm, and the bright checked patterns offer a gentle pop of colour over your favourite warm winter coat.

Alternatively, you could opt for a wool mix blanket scarf for a modern, layered look. Blanket scarves are like wearing an extra wooly layer; choose the right one, and the cascading fabric will hug and complement your figure.

We love the soft brown colourblocks and tapered shape of this blanket wrap scarf, and the oversized dimensions offer superb warmth and a relaxed look. If you’re not sure how to wear it, check out these handy tips courtesy of Refinery29: how to tie a blanket scarf.

Versatile snoods for you and the kids

The snood is a handy winter accessory that can be dressed up or down, or worn as a simple scarf if the sun comes out during the day. Many of this season’s winter coats don’t have any kind of hood, so it’s important to cover your head in winter so you don’t lose as much heat.

Snoods have the added benefit of being loosely draped, rather than fitted, so you don’t end up with the dreaded hat hair that beanie hats can cause. We love this lightweight blue jersey snood, which complements navy overcoats beautifully, and is cosy enough to warm you, without weighing heavily on your head and shoulders.

But snoods aren’t just for women; kids love them too. If your little ones refuse to wear a hat in winter, what about picking up a snood for them instead? They can wear it as a scarf on the way to school, and simply pull it up over their heads if it starts to snow, and because it’s looped it’s easy to hang on their peg in the cloakroom.

Our fun patterned kids’ snoods are just the thing to brighten up a child’s winter outfit, and they cover little necks and ears much more effectively than a simple bobble hat.

Mother’s Day gifts

Mother’s Day falls in March this year, when the daffodils will just be starting to bloom. If you’re planning a gift for your mum, silver jewellery could be just the thing to introduce a little spring sparkle into her wardrobe.

You don’t have to spend a fortune on Mother’s Day; you just have to show you care. Whatever your mum’s tastes, you won’t go wrong with silver. Not only is it classic and elegant, it’ll pair well with her winter wardrobe, which is essential in March when the weather is still likely to be chilly. Silver is reminiscent of dewdrops and snowflakes, and it can be subtle or make a statement, depending on the piece you choose.

As we move from winter into spring, the key is to look for chunky accessories that hold their own against heavy fabrics. These silver spiral drop earrings are just the thing to shed a little light on an outfit. For mums who wear their jewellery loud and proud, this beautiful turquoise stone sits pretty in a burnished silver ring. If you’re interested in buying mum some sterling silver, this 925 sterling silver owl comes on a 16” chain, and we even enclose a beautiful box for easy gifting.
